Toilets
There are a few basic things to know about toilets and important details to understand when making a purchase. While many people might assume there isn’t much to learn, there are actually several factors that stand out and some features that can really benefit you—things you may not have even known existed. The toilet is often the one fixture in the home that can present challenges when redesigning or relocating, largely because the soil pipe is quite large and isn’t always easy to move. For example, you can’t simply drill a large hole through your floor joist to change the toilet’s position. Similarly, the soil pipe embedded in a concrete floor might be set too far from the wall for a newer style toilet to fit properly, and digging it out may not be a practical or cost-effective option. That being said, most situations have workable solutions, and we’re here to help guide you through those if needed. Below, we’ve outlined the different types of toilets you might come across. Within each type, you can find options such as comfort height pans (450mm high), semi-comfort pans (425mm high), and standard pans (400mm high), often paired with flushing features like rimless flushing or box flushing. Rimless toilets are a newer design aimed at improving ease of cleaning and overall hygiene, making them a popular choice for many modern bathrooms.
Low Level & High Level
These original styles are now mostly sold as decorative classics, admired for their timeless charm. They once featured large tanks and powerful flushes, designed without environmental concerns. However, today's versions have been updated to conserve water and use 6 and 4 litre flushes, making them more environmentally friendly. These elegant designs can add a striking and sophisticated touch to your classic bathroom, blending vintage appeal with modern practicality.
Close Couple & Semi Shrouded & Fully Shrouded
Close couple (C/C) is your now standard everyday toilet with the back of the bowl section open for ease of access and installation for plumbers. The Fully Shrouded is the same C/C toilet but the back of bowl is fully covered making more aesthetically pleasing and easier to clean. They are also referred to as fully skirted and fully back to wall. The Semi- Shrouded is as it sounds an in-between to please both the plumber and the homeowner.
Wall Hung & Back to Wall (BTW) Toilets
Wall Hung toilets are mounted off the floor, creating a floating look. This makes cleaning easier and makes the bathroom feel bigger. They use a strong frame hidden behind the wall that supports the weight, usually up to 450kg. The flush parts are accessed via a neat flush plate, and parts can be easily replaced. It's best to choose a trusted brand for easy part replacement, and we can help you with that.
Back to Wall (BTW) toilets sit on the floor with the back of the pan flush against the wall. They hide the cistern in a wall recess or furniture unit. Unlike Wall Hung toilets, they don’t use a supporting frame. You often see BTW toilets in commercial places like pubs and restaurants.
Japanese toilets(bidet toilets)
This type of toilet is the norm in Japan hence the name also known as washlets and smart toilets. They essentially integrated a toilet and bidet together with some added functions that have been added over time in the more expensive toilets. While growing in popularity in the West through brand leaders like Grohe, Geberit and Toto who promote and sell them because of hygiene, environmental and care functionality. We have seen an increased demand in homes caring for people with physical and mental disabilities and elderly who may need home care. The developing cultures diversity in Ireland has also led to increases popularity. The functions they have depend on the model chosen from budget to deluxe.
